Product Introduction

Aluminum ductwork reduces the dead load carried by cleanroom ceiling supports while providing a naturally corrosion-resistant surface for conditioned air. Sections are fabricated from 3003 or 5052 aluminum sheet using lock-formed or welded seams and aluminum flange components. Because aluminum is softer than steel, panel reinforcement and support spacing are selected to prevent distortion during transport and operation. The non-sparking, non-ferrous construction is useful in selected technical areas, provided the conveyed chemicals and galvanic interfaces are compatible with the chosen alloy.

Key Features

Low sheet density reduces handling effort and the permanent load on overhead support systems.

A stable aluminum oxide layer protects the surface in normal indoor clean-air service.

Non-ferrous construction avoids rust staining from exposed cut edges.

Formed stiffeners and closer hanger spacing control deformation in broad rectangular panels.

Customer Product Concerns

Lightweight aluminum duct must be detailed around its lower stiffness, dissimilar-metal contacts and the actual chemical exposure of the air stream.

A steel duct route places excessive load on a long-span cleanroom ceiling.Aluminum sheet lowers duct mass while maintaining the scheduled internal dimensions.
Soft panels dent during lifting and field assembly.Protective packaging, reinforced faces and controlled lifting points maintain the duct geometry.
Direct contact with steel hangers causes galvanic staining in humid areas.Non-conductive isolation pads and compatible fasteners separate dissimilar metals.
A selected cleaning agent dulls or pits the aluminum finish.Alloy and surface treatment are matched to the documented chemical and cleaning exposure.
